Capital loss set-off illustrator

Enter one tax year’s gains and losses. We’ll lay them out as ledger entries in the order HMRC applies them — and show what carries forward.

Add up the gains on each asset you disposed of in the year (after any reliefs). Don’t take off losses here.
Allowable losses on disposals in the same tax year. Leave out losses on disposals to connected people.
Losses from earlier years that you have claimed (reported to HMRC) and not yet used.

Annual exempt amount used: £3,000 (2026/27, individuals). Source

The order, in four lines
  1. Start with all your gains for the tax year.
  2. Take off this year’s losses — in full, even if that takes you below the annual exempt amount.
  3. Take off brought-forward losses — only enough to bring gains down to the annual exempt amount.
  4. Take off the annual exempt amount (£3,000 for 2026/27). Unused losses carry forward.
